I Asked an AI to Plan My Disney Trip — Then I Did It Myself as an Agent. Here's What AI Got Wrong
I'll be honest with you, when a client forwarded me their "perfectly planned" Disney World itinerary and told me they used ChatGPT to build the whole thing, I was curious. Not defensive, genuinely curious. So I decided to run the experiment myself.
I typed in the same kind of prompt a first-time Disney family would use. I gave it our travel dates, the number of people in the group, the ages of the kids, their favorite characters, and a budget range. Within seconds, out came a glossy, confident, paragraph-by-paragraph Disney vacation plan. It looked impressive. It had structure. It had restaurant names, ride suggestions, even morning-to-night timing blocks.
And then I started reading it closely.
As someone who's booked hundreds of Disney vacations, visited the parks more times than I can count, and stays up to date on every single policy change Disney rolls out, I caught the problems almost immediately! The AI didn't just get a few things slightly off. It got things wrong in ways that would have genuinely derailed this family's trip before they ever walked through the gates!
So here's the full breakdown, what AI actually got wrong, what a real Disney travel agent does differently, and why that gap matters more in 2026 than ever before!
What I Asked and What I Got Back
The prompt I used was simple and realistic, the kind of thing any parent planning their first Disney trip might type into ChatGPT or Google Gemini:
"Plan a 5-day Disney World vacation for two adults and two kids (ages 4 and 7). The kids love Frozen, The Little Mermaid, and Toy Story. We want to hit all four parks, eat at a couple of themed restaurants, and stay on Disney property."
Simple enough, right? The AI delivered a detailed response in seconds! It organized each day by park, listed specific rides, named restaurants, and gave timing recommendations. From the outside, it looked like the work of someone who knew what they were doing.
But here's what it got wrong!
Mistake #1: It Referenced Rides and Experiences That No Longer Exist
This was the first red flag, and it's a big one!
The AI recommended DINOSAUR at Animal Kingdom as a "must-do" for the kids. The problem? DINOSAUR permanently closed on February 2, 2026. That attraction is gone. A family that shows up expecting that ride doesn't just feel disappointed, they feel misled by the person (or tool) who told them to plan around it.
This happens constantly with AI travel planning. Because AI tools pull from sources all over the internet without being able to sort current from outdated, they end up mixing in blog posts, Reddit threads, and articles from two or three years ago alongside current information. The internet doesn't delete old content, which means AI doesn't know that a restaurant has closed, a character meet-and-greet has moved, or a beloved ride has been retired.
As a Disney travel agent, I track these changes as part of my job. When DINOSAUR closed and the Animal Kingdom Lightning Lane lineup shifted significantly, I immediately updated every template, recommendation, and itinerary framework I use. AI doesn't do that automatically and it certainly doesn't know to warn you.

Mistake #2: The Meet-and-Greet Locations Were Incorrect
I can feel your pain over this one as it happens quite often with families who come to Disney World.
According to the AI, Anna and Elsa were supposed to appear at the Princess Fairytale Hall located in Magic Kingdom. This information is wrong because Anna and Elsa can be found at the Royal Sommerhus in the Norway Pavilion of Epcot Park, and not in Magic Kingdom. It’s super disappointing for the family whose kids had been excited about meeting their favorite characters all day long only to find out the location was wrong.
This is not just a small problem because character meet-and-greet locations can be changed quite often or even cancelled. These are updated by Disney quite often depending on various reasons, including seasonal events, park reservations, or any kind of special events. An AI would not be able to cope with such an enormous update rate, while Disney's specialized travel agent definitely will!
Mistake #3: The Dining Plan Was Completely Backwards
The strategy implemented behind that restaurant list is so flawed that if we took this family's booking seriously, they would spend a whole week enjoying fast food restaurants rather than visiting the ones we all would want to eat at.
According to Disney, people who possess a valid resort hotel reservation can secure all dining reservations starting 60 days from the date of their arrival, for all days of their stay at the park. This means that when the reservation period starts, you can book all your days of dining during those five days, and even more! The best times for making those bookings are early mornings since that is when the 6:00 AM slot opens. And, of course, the most desirable character dining experience tables get booked almost immediately!
Unfortunately, AI did not mention any of this information, but, instead, listed all restaurants for families without even pointing out the 60-day period, the importance of booking at 6:00 AM, and the most popular restaurants that do not remain available for long after the 60 days start. So, if a family follows AI's recommendations and plans their booking a couple of weeks before the trip, the chances are that they will only find what nobody wants.
We understand everything about Disney booking and My Disney Experience. A Disney travel agent teaches our clients all the nuances of this booking process so that they could know which restaurants should be prioritized and which could be secured easily!
Mistake #4: It Completely Misunderstood the Lightning Lane System
Disney's Lightning Lane system is arguably one of the most often misunderstood aspects of Disney World, and this confusion was only exacerbated by the AI!
Namely, the proposed itinerary used "Genie+" and "FastPass" interchangeably, even within a single paragraph. First of all, FastPass is not a valid product in Walt Disney World anymore. This system had been abolished in 2021. Genie+ is no more, it got renamed to Lightning Lane Multi Pass in 2024.
As of 2026, there are three types of Lightning Lane passes offered by Disney World:
Lightning Lane Multi Pass – a charge per person and per day that provides guests with the ability to book their arrival window at selected attractions (used to be called Genie+)
Lightning Lane Single Pass – additional charges per ride for high-demand attractions such as Tron and Guardians of the Galaxy
Lightning Lane Premier Pass – limited number of tickets available per day that give a guest unlimited Lightning Lane access to any rides at a chosen park during the entire day, without having to specify return time
The choice of which kind of Lightning Lane ticket (or whether any should be purchased at all) depends heavily on the park, seasonality, and which rides have been currently out of service due to refurbishing or re-theming. As of 2026, Dinosaur is already closed forever and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is currently being re-themed at Hollywood Studios, the approach to purchasing Lightning Lane tickets at those two locations has changed drastically compared to previous years.
Even more, the Multi Pass offer is much less attractive at Animal Kingdom due to its current configuration of attractions. On the contrary, Epcot is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate because of multiple Tier 1 attractions requiring long wait times.
In this case, the AI's suggestion to use Genie+, a non-existent product by this point in time, does not provide guests with any helpful information on how to proceed. A Disney travel agent can tailor an itinerary specifically to fit your preferences and is constantly keeping themselves up to date on everything happening at the parks.
Mistake #5: The Itinerary Was Physically Impossible
And in this case, the problem is likely underestimated by AI planners, because it's not unique to Disney. It's a systematic issue that results in unrealistic and unworkable schedules when it comes to logistics.
In our example above, AI suggested packing tight schedules into 20 to 30 minutes between activities that involved moving from one side of the park to another, while taking into account absolutely no wait time at all for any of the attractions. Not to mention, one particular event was set up for 9:00 AM despite the fact that Ariel doesn't start her meet-and-greets until 10:00 AM.
For starters, Disney World is a huge park where even a quick stroll may take up to 15 minutes in low crowd season and significantly longer in high season. When you add to it a baby in a stroller, a stop in the bathroom, a detour for Mickey's pretzels...the entire minute-by-minute itinerary falls through.
The main problem with planning travel with AI is not what it forgets, but how confident it is about getting it wrong. Perfectly calculated plans with terrible logistics!
A realistic Disney World schedule requires buffer time, an understanding of crowd trends, and the actual time required to visit each place and attraction. Such experience can be only gained by someone who physically visited these parks, many times!
Mistake #6: It Missed the Insider Magic Entirely
But aside from inaccuracies, it is the human understanding that AI simply cannot duplicate. This is where the real magic of a visit to Disney lies instead of just the mere logistics involved.
AI would be unaware that the Carousel of Progress can serve as an excellent retreat during Florida summers when temperatures hit 3:00 PM and become unbearable. AI does not know that it is best to arrive at the park's opening time (even 30 minutes before official park hours) in order to enjoy several headlining rides before the crowd gathers. AI is also unable to share the rider swap program that allows parents to stay with their child who is too young to ride and join the line later after completing their ride without waiting again in the queue.
AI fails to comprehend what visiting a theme park is like for people who have little children. In addition, an experienced Disney travel planner will be able to recommend that one take a break during lunch in a resort hotel, find a place to watch a parade accessible by strollers, or even make a dinner reservation in one of the restaurants where children can interact with cartoon characters.
So, Is AI Totally Useless for Disney Planning?
Let's be fair, it is not completely useless!
Artificial intelligence can truly be helpful in coming up with a rough idea. Understanding what rides you can find in each park, comprehending the approximate age range for various rides, or generating a potential concept of how a certain resort type looks like, it makes sense. It is a good starting point for those who have zero knowledge about Disney but wish to get their bearings before proceeding further.
There is, however, a massive difference between being helpful in planning a trip and relying on AI as the foundation of one's vacation plan, particularly the one potentially costing $8,000-$12,000. This chasm is where the Disney travel agents operate daily!
A study conducted in 2025 showed that 30% of international visitors are using AI technology to plan vacations. That percentage will definitely grow! Nonetheless, there is ample evidence of AI failing precisely in the places where the details should be current, the logic practical, and the planning tailored specifically to the individual family rather than some prompts.
What a Disney Travel Agent Actually Does
Some people believe that Disney travel agents are just booking the same thing you can book yourself. This is far from reality!
A Disney-specific travel agent will have updated information about every rule, price change, attraction, schedule, construction period, event taking place in the entire resort! Every time there is a change in the price for the lightning lanes, every time there is a new meeting point for a character, when there is a modification in the period of making a restaurant reservation, when some ride is closed for refurbishment, we know about it, and this information affects our advice to you.
Also, we take into account personal preferences of yours and members of your family. Are you a rope-drop family, or rather morning leisurely types? Do you plan naps for your children? Does one member of your party crave thrills, but another one suffers from nausea? What is your true budget for a vacation in Walt Disney World, not just how much it costs for tickets? All these things will be taken into account while preparing the itinerary for your family.
And here's one thing that will surprise many people, using a Disney travel agent doesn't cost you a dime! Disney agents receive their compensation for booking services directly from the company. So, whatever amount you will pay for your Disney vacation package, you would pay the same amount anyway regardless of whether you book on your own or with a Disney travel agent!
The Conclusion
It’s amazing how AI works! AI gives you an insight into some new ideas; helps you develop a rough plan; gives you the general idea of your future destination where you never been before. But in case of Disney World, which keeps changing all the time, knows all about its secrets, needs up-to-date information in order to help you plan your trip, it cannot replace a person who knows all about it!
In fact, my experiment proved one more time that it is impossible to trust AI while organizing your trip. The fact is that a person who organizes your Disney trip always starts planning your trip considering all your wishes. On the other hand, AI plans your trip using a database, and this database is created according to people's memories.
There were many mistakes made by AI. I am glad about that since that is what it is for, just helping you to start something. And then your personal Disney travel agent appears in order to finish everything!
